Halloween is here! We love Halloween, but choosing an outfit can be stressful, expensive, or just more effort than we want to put into it. Luckily, many Halloween costumes can be easily created just from the clothes in your closet and common household items. This is a fun way to get creative and give you a unique and interesting Halloween costume this year, even if it’s just put together last minute.
Catwoman
Channel your inner superhero by dressing as Catwoman. All you need is a pair of black jeggings jeans, or leggings, a black turtleneck, and a black leather jacket. Wear with a black pair of boots, use some eyeliner to paint a cat nose and whiskers on your face, and makeshift a tail from a pair of old stockings or a bathrobe sash. You can either buy cat ears or make your own easily by attaching cutout ears to a headband.
Witch
Dressing as a witch for Halloween is such a classic and fun way to get dressed up. Find a long black dress in your closet, wear it with a pair of funky boots and stockings, throw a little flour in your hair to make it wiry and wild, and carry around your kitchen broom. If you have a pointy hat and some face paint, all the better, but this costume should definitely suffice for a last-minute Halloween option.
Mermaid
Pull out the sequins, bikini top, and metallic leggings; it’s time to dress like a mermaid. Make some cutout seashells to attach to your top over your chest. Get your glitter and shimmer on by wearing whatever sequins and metallic you have. One of the easiest last-minute DIY Halloween costumes is the hippie. Channel your inner Woodstock, 1960s bohemian, or Coachella girl and deck yourself out in your most hippie look possible. Think oversized sunglasses, a flower crown, fun accessories, shorts or bellbottoms, a maxi skirt, a knit crop top, and an oversized vest or sarong top. Wear with sandals, boots, or go all out and go barefoot for the perfect hippie look.
Cowgirl
Another super-easy go-to DIY Halloween costume is the cowgirl. Put your hair in braids, get out those light-wash jeans or jean shorts, and wear a button-up blouse or a flannel shirt. Don’t forget the cowboy-style boots and hat for an added Western flair.
Queen of Hearts
Put on a long red dress and find your household deck of cards for this easy DIY costume. The Queen of Hearts is an iconic classic costume that you can easily do yourself at home. Put on a red dress, put your hair back, attach the heart suit of cards from your deck on your outfit, and even make yourself a makeshift crown. Use your makeup to add little heart accents to your face or arms. Don’t forget to yell “off with their heads” at least once.
A Tourist
Grab everything you’ve got in your closet that’s tacky and dress up as a tourist. Sunglasses, a bucket hat, your Hawaiian shirt, women khaki shorts and walking shoes—and don’t forget the fanny pack. You can also make it more personal by wearing your favorite touristy shirt from a place you’ve traveled to that you love.

Don’t really feel like dressing up, and you’re kind of leaning toward being lazy? The solution to this is to wear your pajamas to Halloween. Yes, you heard correctly. Dress as a cat lady by wearing your favorite pajamas, flannel robe loafers, and even add curlers to your hair. All the better if your kids have some stuffed animal cats lying around the house that you can put in your robe pockets or carry around for your Halloween outings.
A Scarecrow
Grab a farmers’ hat, a flannel shirt, and an oversized pair of pants to dress like a scarecrow for Halloween. If you have some straw or straw-like packing material lying around, then stuff that into your pockets and hair. You can either go just as you are or take it to the next level and use some extra clothes to stuff into your shirt, so you look like a stuffed scarecrow. Use some makeup to draw some freckles on your face for a finishing touch.
Iconic Movie Characters
Mary Poppins, Sandy and Danny, or Elle Woods. Take your pick. Think of one of your favorite iconic movie characters and dress like them. If you have a lot of pink in your closet, then you can probably pull off an Elle Woods. Take along your dog for added effect. If you’re dressing up with your husband, dress as Sandy and Danny from Grease. Wear a form-fitting pair of black high rise jeans with an off-the-shoulder black shirt and curled hair. For your husband, a leather jacket, black jeans, and a T-shirt will do the trick. Grease lightning all the way.
